Shorland Mk.I Armoured Car

INTRODUCTION

When I have found resin AMC kit I immediately decided to build it and started to search references. Fortunately I have found  "The Shorlad Site" and its willing author Clive Elliott. Thanks to him I learned a lot about various Shorlad versions and modifications, simply get good background to build what I want form my resin kit.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

The vehicle I built is model of Clive's restored Shorland Mk.I in fact. Unfortunately AMCE kit represents something like mix of Mk.1 and Mk.3 version so I had to modify something and also add several details as follows:

1) left fuel tank cover removed

2) extractor fan  removed and rear hatch remodeled

3)  some lights and glass added on back

4) turret hath frames removed and replaced with new made of sheet strips

5) engine hood z plechu jsem také vyrobil patky na krytu motoru

6) sheet clips added on bonnet

7) mirrors made of plastic added

I had to solve following problems during construction:

1) it wasn't simple to seat two vertically divided parts of the hull and fill and fine clean arise gap

2) it was difficult to suspension together and let the car  stand on all four, all wheels had to be drilled and axles partly cut

3) I used only radiator grille from kit ethced set, the rest wasn't necessary or it's better to replaced with wire

CAMOUFLAGE & MARKING

Clive's Shorland is restored in marking of Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) from 1972.  I decided for my model representing early vehicle in police marking of Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) from 1969. Clive recommended me colour and LP number.

Completed model is placed on small round base with figure of "RUC" officer beside. The figure was born as mix of Preiser, EASCI figure parts, sheet and little of Milliput.

Clive also told me about often demonstrators attacks using colour tints and battles to make government vehicle dirty ad well as covers visors during street violence. Unfortunately I decided to make my model dirty too and final result is really poor according to my opinion!:-(

CONCLUSION

Though final result looks how looks and that constructions of the kit wasn't simple I plan to continue in Shorland series and build also Shorland Mk.2, Mk.3 and Mk.4 in future. I have got enough background /except good Mk.4 camouflage/already to start.

I recommend AMC kit only to experienced modellers!.
